A. English Action Plan A1. Major concern: Foster students’ reading and writing skills 1.Foster students’ reading skills: - Apply reading strategies on Daily Readers. No less than 10 exercises from the Daily Readers are selected for in-depth training. - Provide leveled reading articles or comprehensions to cater for learner diversity - Recommend reading articles to students through English Blog monthly. No less than 8 pieces of reading articles are introduced during morning assembly and posted on the English Blog. - Strengthen students’ reading strategies through PLP-R program - Use of newspapers to broaden students’ reading exposure and develop their word banks. At least 1 piece of text from the newspapers is chosen for sharing each month. - Story time during Thursday lunch recess. No less than 8 storybooks will be covered. - Introduce authentic reading materials, such as government and commercial posters and advertisements. No less than 6 pieces of authentic reading materials are posted on the English Blog. 2. Foster students’ writing skills - Use of scaffolding strategies in teaching writing to describe and demonstrate proper writing procedures. - Introduce common phrases, expressions and connectives to facilitate students’ writings. - Assign Free Writing regularly to polish students’ writing skills and develop their writing habits. - Organize an online voting for writing competition thru English Blog.
A2. Major concern: Promote a schoolwide culture of engagement, to strengthen a sense of loyalty and belonging 1. Organize different language activities and competitions to promote students’ engagement. 2. Show caring to others by writing memos, notes, cards or letters. A3. Major concern: Cultivate a schoolwide culture of appreciation, to raise students’ confidence 1. Introduce appreciation quotes, poems or verses during morning assembly and post them in corridors and stairways. 2. Organize a year-end cross-level writing competition by using the theme ‘Appreciate someone’. 3. Students’ masterpieces are being published on the Student Post and the English Blog.
B1. Other concern: Fine-tuning of phonics teaching and the Magic Words Program 1. Enhance students’ phonological awareness and knowledge of vocabulary. Provide more interactive activities and conduct regular assessment of phonics teaching in PLP-R 2. Extend the word list of Magic Words Programme by integrating the recommended word lists from the Cambridge YLE exam and other resources
